I’ve been thinking a lot about something lately and wanted to share with you some insight into why I am in the field that I am in, and what keeps driving me forwards within this industry!
Most of you will know that I truly love what I do! I have been involved in the fitness industry for quite some time now, and prior to that I was always into competitive sports. I played a lot of hockey and managed to work my way up to playing Provincial Jr. A. Most kids always had that dream of playing in the NHL. I did not differ from that either. I wanted to play alongside some of the greatest players in history! Unfortunately, I knew that I wasn’t going to. I could see the difference between myself and some of the other top players in my league. They were faster, more agile, had softer hands, etc.
The hardest thing for me was to be able to recognize and realize that I needed to head in a different direction. I moved away from competitive sports and engulfed myself into education (although through this education, I certainly will have the opportunity to work within the athletic world again, training young athletes as I once was!). I received a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Kinesiology from York University, although quickly learned that this was just the beginning of a lifelong journey.
I took a Resistance Training Specialist course that opened my eyes to a much larger view of the fitness industry. How we cannot be satisfied with being complacent, but rather need to constantly pursue more! And so I did. I continued to study the revolutionary Muscle Activation Techniques and went through the Internship program to become a Certified Specialist. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life to date and I certainly look forward to what else is to come as I embark into their Mastery level program.
So that is the boring background stuff, but now into my real passion! Yes, I have a passion for fitness. Yes, I have a passion for healthy living. Yes, I have a passion for being able to help people, some really incredible people (that is all of you!). But ultimately, I have a passion for teaching and educating! I thirst for knowledge and I want to share all of that with you!! I was taught at the beginning of this journey that as you learn, you realize the amount of knowledge you have yet to learn. One door leads to two, and two leads to four and the process just continues on! I will be the first to admit that I do not know everything! I am constantly learning and discovering new things! Each new thing increases my passion and provides me with the opportunity to share more with you!
I have had the opportunity to get to know some of my clients very well, and you all inspire me to dive deeper and deeper into this journey so that I may provide a better experience for you! A client that I saw this morning said one very inspiring thing to me. She mentioned how she is a very competitive person by nature, but when it comes to exercise and physical fitness, she doesn’t care who is in front, behind, or passing her, just as long as she is better than the day before. We are on this journey for ourselves, and only ourselves! It doesn’t matter where Sally is in her fitness level, or how John is doing with his new workouts. Wemust always be moving forward, regardless of the rest of the pack, focusing on bettering ourselves.
My goal for every client is to teach you something new! To offer something more to you so that you can leave after each appointment and not only say that was a good workout, I’m feeling better, but also to say I learned something new today! I believe that this is extremely important. Any trainer or Kinesiologist can count to 10 while you do an exercise, but not everyone can teach you something about that exercise. Why you are doing it? |How are you doing it? What is the goal of the exercise? My hope is that I provide that for you! As much as I enjoy learning myself, I enjoy teaching others more! I hope that you go away from your workouts not only feeling that you have done better or feel better but that you have truly learned something.
Here’s to a more educated fitness industry, both clients and trainers alike! If we all work together, we can truly create an unstoppable fitness force!
