Have you seen the movie Groundhog Day? This movie was filmed back in 1993 and is about a weatherman who ends up living through the same day…over and over again…
Do you ever feel like that’s your life right now…your daily routine.
This has been something that I have felt for, well, since March 2020…
It’s so easy to get stuck in the monotony of our daily routines. Rinse and repeat.
Overtime, our habits will change (usually for the worse) and the rut we have dug looks like the Grand Canyon. It can be overwhelming to think of how to get out of that hole, oftentimes so much so that we say it’s easier to just stay with the current trajectory of our lives – going deeper and deeper into this pit.
There’s one phrase I’ve heard more often than almost anything else I can think of when speaking with people about their fitness plan, especially given this last year…
“I need to get back on track.” And I’m in that same boat with you…
So…What does this mean?
The track that we are on is our track. We’re always on it and heading in one direction or another. The habits and action steps we follow daily put us on a certain trajectory, good or bad.
How do you ensure that you’re always moving forward? Ditch the “all or nothing” mindset.
If you hit a rough period with your schedule — whether that’s work, school, kids or all of the above — there’s a temptation to give up or “pause” your fitness program. This belief comes from the “all or nothing” mindset, and this mindset is seriously flawed. The thought that if you don’t get in all of your workouts this week, then you might as well not get in any of them. Or if you can’t eat healthy every meal, then what’s the point in this one?
It’s a pattern of self destruction that needs to be broken…
Stop trying to be perfect. Nobody is. Except maybe my wife, but that’s just for brownie points…
Stop believing that if you don’t have time for a gym workout and 3 healthy meals that support your healthy lifestyle goals, it’s a lost day. It’s not. There is always ONE thing you can do (or not do) that will move you closer to your goals.
Control what you can control. Finding it hard to get a good workout at home? Get some movement in with your kids by going for a bike ride or playing basketball on the driveway. You can still hit your water intake goal for the day as a positive check at the end of your day (which takes no extra time, by the way).
Ask for help. Having a coach or even just a workout buddy can go a long way toward helping you stay accountable … and not get discouraged when things don’t go as planned.
As part of that accountability, I’m going to be reaching out with some regular correspondence for each of you…so stay tuned for your weekly lesson on how you can Win The Day!
Remember, there is no such thing as being “on track” or “off track.” We’re ALWAYS on track. It is just a question of whether we are moving in the right direction.
